The Growing house next door and my disappearing garden.

It's been about 3months since they flattened the house next door, their is a period after they put the slab down where it is left for a while to cure and we had rain in this period but this all helps in the process as  it stops it from drying out to quickly, the things you learn when they build next door.
So far all the tradesmen have been friendly and not real noisy.

But the brickies arrived yesterday morning at 6am, they are noisy, they swear a lot and very loudly and in english so we know everything they are saying, but it's the singing now that's bad, the other tradesmen sing too but they are more in tune.
I think it should be part of their training they take singing lessons.

This is going to be a big house and no real room for a garden, this is the end of my house and there one is still going.
It was a busy week, I made a new top for my potatoes and onion jar, if I use the lid they potatoes and onions go mouldy in the summer so I made a material top so they could breath, works well.
Notice my curtains and toaster cover match but I had run out of material so I couldn't match up with the the potato jar.

Also extended the curtain in the craft room, I need a tiny blind for this room when someone sleeps here  to darken it up, I will have to make one as I never seen one small enough or the right colour.

Now the garden well Drumstick is a digger, so far all pots are safe and the herb garden is doing well.
And she leaves her areas alone
But other areas are fair game, she hunts the insects and snails and any plants in the way are fair game too.

No ground covers have survived and pots now live in  gardens

But I am learning to cope, what I need is some nice big prickly plants, she leaves them alone.

 and lots of ornaments.
Well the sun is shining and it's the first day of summer so I 'm off to have a few words with my chook and fix up any damage she has done in the night, we can't lock her up she is a wiz at getting out of places.

  1. Well, it will be fun outwitting Drumstick.
Will that tall new house block the garden sun?

  2. No we have trees growing along that side of the fence, that one spot is the only area where a tree doesn't shade the garden so our sun should be pretty much the same.
    I hope.

  3. Ugh! In the U.S. we have a word for those imposing houses...McMansions! Sorry that your garden is shrinking! Everything looks gorgeous though, love your little window with the curtains:)

    1. Usually the McMansions are 2 story but there are 1 story ones being built now and this one is shaping up to be one.

  4. Yes! Victoria is right! It sounds like a McMansion! Except usually they are all built smack next to each other at once and they have homeowners associations. Those are basically committees that tell you you can't have a garden, or hang out your washing, or wave a flag, or pretty much anything. And then they fine you big money if you do.

    1. We have body corporates in a lot of our unit buildings and they are little hitlers they dictate to the rest of the people living there what they can and can't do, and if you rent in a lot of these places you are treated like a second class citizen, or so I've been told.

  5. Your herb garden is fantastic!! So much growing in there!!! I hope that the house they are building doesn't block to much light for your beautiful space. And yes they should be trained with singing lessons! A happy weekend to you lady!

    1. I'm so pleased with the herbs.
Most of my light comes from the back so it's not going to make much difference.
It's a bit late to wish you a happy weekend it's Monday morning so happy week.

  7. I am fascinated that Drumstick leaves your herbs alone - not flavouring her flesh (just in case)?
Sigh about the rest of the garden. Charge her double rent.

  8. A bonus with drumstick eating the greens is you'll have lovely rich eggs, high in iron, and you won't have bugs eating your plants either, she'll get them all. Have you thought about a portable covered chicken coop? There are instructions for making them online or you could get one from a pet store. It seems a shame to coop her up though. Chicken poop is excellent fertiliser too.
I've never thought to make a toaster cover, I remember they were all the rage many years ago and quilted ones were available in shops for a while. For me, thta would just be one more unnecessary thing that needs washing.
The new house certainly looks huge, even bigger than I thought they would build. Probably it is for someone who can't be bothered with a garden and they'll spend many happy hours looking out at yours being thankful they don't have to do any of the work, just enjoy the sight.

    1. We have Pidge's cage he never uses it, he sleeps under the eves out back and only goes into the cage for his food but it's tall not suitable for a chicken and a small dog kennel that's was M&M's but that must still smell like dog as she doesn't go neat it, I like her to be free range and she is company when I'm in the garden, she is just like a puppy dog in some ways, the cats ignore you most of the time as cats do.
I made the toaster cover because one of my cats piddled in my old toaster and I had to throw it out of course I had eaten half a piece before I woke up to why it smelled so bad, never found out who did it and its never happened again.
      Lucky for them cats.

  10. I do get annoyed when a neighbor builds an imposing house to shade mine and cut off my view. But I guess the house that was torn down was an eyesore and this will add to the value of your property so it's sorta tit or tat. Drumsticks is my kind of chicken. I would like a couple of chickens but then I'm tied down with feeding them. Perhaps my neighbor would give them some feed if I leave for a few days.and give her some eggs. Who feeds Drumstick when you take a few days vacation?

    1. It's not only drumstick we have 4 cats and a pet bird that flys free but come home to sleep and eat.
In the last 12 months we have lost our children, one has moved to another state and the other closer to the city centre and neighbours on both sides have gone so there has been big changes all round we still see all these people but they are to far away to feed the animals so we don't go anywhere together if we have to stay overnight. It's not much of a problem we are mainly home people now
