Toodstools

We often have toadstools pop up after rain but they are usually dead the next morning or at least that afternoon.
We had rain about 2 or 3 days ago and not a great deal these were up the road from me I've never had these ones in my garden and they have never lasted this long before.

These are more like the ones I get but never in full sun.

  1. Love them. We don't often get enough rain - but they are fascinating to see when we do. Thank you.

  2. Your toadstools are actually quite pretty, the yellow is a lovely colour.
In my last place I used to get tiny skinny toadstools about one inch high and when I touched them to pull them out of the grass the stems disintegrated and my fingers were left black and slimy.
In my daughters yard lately they have mushrooms popping up all over the back lawn. Real mushrooms! Just like the ones you buy in shops. They don't eat them, just in case, but I suspect they grew from old mushroom compost used by the man next door in his veggie garden. some spores must have blown over the fence and found ideal conditions.

    1. You just don't know what you can eat and what you cant.
I once went mushrooming with my sister in law and we found many of them she cooked them up and we had a great feed, there were a few left so we were going to have them with steak the next day, our hubbies didn't eat them The next day they were alive with maggots so we had to throw them out but they were the best mushrooms I had ever eaten.

I used to go mushroom picking with my parents at my Grandma's place...lovely big portobello/field mushrooms. I must admit that the ones we see growing here, don;t look at all appetizing.

  4. I don't know mushrooms from mushrooms, either. I have the yellow bubble ones after a rain; I think the spores are in the mulch I use.

    1. That could explain a lot as I often get some after rain and often in mulched areas.

  7. Your toadstools are really interesting, Merle - I find mushrooms in the fall here, too. Some of them have little bites taken out of them and I always wonder if there is some poor poisoned creature lying close by, or if I am passing up something very delectable. Hard to know! I wish I knew an expert. They are always fun to find - did you see any gnomes? :) xo Karen

    1. No gnomes, but this taken at midday and it was sunny so I was surprised that they were still alive as I saw them the afternoon before but didn't have my camera, i should always carry it in my pocket as you never know what you will see.

  8. I can't believe it rained there two days ago, Merle. It has been very warm here. The toadstools are interesting. I've never seen those last ones before. It's good that it rained......it makes everything clean and refreshed again.

  12. Lovely toadstool pics!

I get quite excited to see them pop up in our yard once in a while. I've even sketched them at times. Like Joanne, I don't know mushrooms from mushrooms out in the fields so would never risk picking them to eat. There are so many poisonous varieties. Do you remember a couple of years back when a chef (in Canberra, I think) cooked up some freshly picked mushrooms for himself and a couple of friends? The mushrooms were toxic and he and one other died. So sad.
