Remember the 60's and the latest painting.

Last week was wet and I had flu so I worked on my latest painting, looked at old magazines and pottered around, my son had gone back to Brisbane and the beer fairy was worn out so he slept a lot so a very quite week.

and fiddled with this one still not happy withe the eye but some paintings are never right.
I bought this magazine every month in the 60'sand have kept them all these years it was a great time to be a teenager, things were changing women were reaching out and finding a place in the world other than married and mothers but you still were considered a old maid if you weren't married by 30ys but these days no one is referred to as a old maid that term has gone out use so thats a good thing.
But the models were not stick thin and curls were in fashion along with long straight hair so you were covered both ways.
A model smoking on the cover now that's something you don't see today.
And I always loved tweed coats
Dressers were still worn a lot
John was still alive and kicking, and who has nude pictures of him and Yoko.

They have moved every time I moved and look a bit tattered and torn but it's a trip down memory lane to read them so I thought i would share them with you, these are all english mags but England was the flavour of the month at that time.

  6. If you have the space to store them, it is good to store old magazines and flick through them years later. I kept a few, not many.

There is something so perfect and beautiful about those times....slower in that technology wasn't ruling everything. I loved looking at them! Happy weekend to you! Nicole xo

  8. Lots of fun looking through those magazines ... my! how times have changed. You said you loved tweed jackets well I loved pleated tweed skirts and owned one very special skirt my Mum & Dad bought for my 18th Birthday. I noticed on your side-bar a photo of you taken at Monet's Garden at Giverny, I wonder in which season you visited? ... isn't it the most delightful place.

And yes, I remember that magazine too. It was out of my price range - but I looked at it at newsagents. And dreamed.

    1. It's funny you should say that as there were 17 and 18 mags too but i had to wait till I was 19 because I couldn't afford the other ones wages were not so good in those days, but everyone had a job.

    2. No, wages weren't good. My first job - in the early seventies I was paid 23 cents an hour. And worked very hard for it too.

  10. That's such a lovely walk down memory lane for me Merle.
I don't remember that particular magazine. I still love tweed coats and I had a blue tweedy plaid coat dress as my 'going away' outfit!
Yes we thought John and Yoko were very avant garde with their "love-ins"!
    Have a happy weekend

  12. You are blessed with talent and I do enjoy looking at your pictures. Old magazines are fun to delve into every so often. I too used to have a stack of old mags but chucked them on this last move to a smaller place. How delightful to look at the clothes and I love the coats too.
    Sorry you had the flu....bummer.

  15. I love your paintings! They speak from your soul and that's what makes them unique:)

Wow, John Lennon was all leg, wasn't he? That's awesome that you still have those old mags. I collected Vogue in the 80's, I had a friend who went to Europe during that time and bought me several European Vogues but sadly, my mom threw them all away after I moved out:( Boohoo:(

  17. I don't remember ever seeing 19 in the sixties, but I remember Twiggy and a lot of girls in school tried to copy her look. There was one girl who was naturally as thin as Twiggy so she carried the look quite well. I didn't have money for magazines back then but I borrowed 17 from the library a few times, mostly I just read books though, I never cared much for fashions and fads. Nice trip down memory lane for you. I've moved house several times with stacks of Home Beautiful and House and Garden magazines, they're all gone now.

      East Africa 4/50
      New Zealand 35c
      Rhodesia 4/-
      South Africa 35c
      West Africa 3/6
That was a lot of money in those days.

  18. What a collection of magazines Merle !! Especially liked that bare butt one!
You are quite an artist!! I've tried doing the ocean and it turned into a mud puddle!! You made a comment on my walk down memory lane with the houses on my street! I almost wrote in there - the house with the red tile roof- the man who lived there went next door and hacked off the ladies head who lived in the house with the green trim. They even wrote a book about the murder!! Yes - if the walls of homes could talk!!

    1. I had to go back and check, they all look so peaceful but you never know what has happened in houses of the past but if there was a murder would a feeling linger, do bricks and morter pick up evil. I visited a old fortress in Tasmania many years ago and in the cells I felt sick the feeling in that place was truly evil.

  20. I like your paintings - what talent you have. I am not a painter, but think about this regarding the little girl's eye: when we are looking down, from the side it looks like our eyes are almost closed. Perhaps that will help. Or not! Again, I'm not an artist. I enjoyed seeing your flowers and your kitties.

  21. Hey, I've still got that tweed coat and hat! They are Biba. I used to have a matching long waistcoat and trousers but the trousers were unlined and very itchy and the waistcoat too bulky beneath the coat so they are long gone.
